In late 2018, I was awarded a research fellowship to complete a cyanotype project exploring the effects of various toners on cyanotype exposures utilizing a variety of available papers. The project was founded on a technical foundation rather than as an artistic endeavor. At the same time, my daughter was going through the diagnosis for what was later determined to be an allergic autoimmune disorder. As I continued to experiment with various bleaching agents, used prior to toning, I became engrossed in the repetition of coating the pieces of paper. After exposing to sunlight outdoors, I began to break down the chemistry through bleaching and damaging the paper substrate through crumpling, folding, or leaving the paper outdoors for extended periods of time. This act allowed me to process the lack of control I felt over my daughter’s disease while allowing detachment from outcome, which provided an outlet for catharsis. Included below is a small sample of these works.
