“The very classification “amateur” has an apologetic ring. But that very word—from the Latin amator, “lover”—means one who does something for the love of the thing rather than for economic reasons or necessity.”

Maya Deren, 1959

In my artistic practice, I focus on the construction of my reality as an ever-shifting vision of what I perceive as “real.” My work is influenced by memories, nostalgia, and idealized versions of womanhood found in media and appropriated imagery. Through an embrace of the inherent contradictions and challenges posed by conventional norms, I can process fundamental questions of identity, self-sufficiency, and self-expression. Despite lacking formal training in film, I approach the medium with the enthusiasm of an amateur, allowing for a sense of detachment and the joy of experimentation.

These films were produced during my masters program in visual studies from 2020-2023. Three of the segments accompany my thesis, Reframing Womanhood: Conformity, Containment, and the Subversive Power of Refusal, which encompasses my research throughout the program. The document, and access to the films, are available upon request.
